Breakthrough

Empowering Lives Through Mentorship and Education
Co-founded in 2007 by Sister Kathy Nolan and a dedicated team of volunteer mentors, Breakthrough is a transformative 12-week, 24-session outreach and education program for homeless and formerly homeless individuals. Through this initiative, Mercy Haven extends its reach beyond housing, equipping participants with the tools, confidence, and strategies to break the cycle of homelessness and achieve personal goals.
Each participant is paired with a mentor who provides goal-setting support and guidance to help prevent recurring challenges. Over the course of the program, individuals engage in critical life skills training, including conflict resolution, budgeting, resume building, job seeking, self-esteem development, and relationship-building.
As of January, 2025, 311 participants have successfully graduated from Breakthrough, meeting the requirement of attending at least 22 out of 24 sessions. Many graduates have gone on to secure stable housing, find employment, and pursue higher education, proving that with the proper support, lasting change is possible.
