Our “Growing Together” Community Garden brings our residents and community members together to grow fresh, healthy foods. Groups from the Brentwood and Bay Shore Communities and residents of Mercy Haven work to create a garden that feeds both body and spirit. Gardening has been shown to stimulate thought, provide physical exercise and encourage an awareness of natural surroundings. Participants have identified the community garden as a symbol of hope for goodness, growth and renewal.
Located at Mercy Enrichment in Brentwood, the garden came to life through the efforts of more than a dozen community groups. Growers and volunteers throughout each season tend to sixteen 100-square foot beds. This healthy food goes right from the garden to the table of garden members and some of the community’s most vulnerable residents, with 10% being donated to local food pantries.
Gardening represents the potential for good in our world, amongst so much bad; it represents the hopes and dreams of people from all walks of life, all people … I hope the garden project was as fruitful and spiritual to others as it was to me.
